(25) The cherry blossoms flowering
in the garden where monk Saigyo lived

The field where lilies are flowering

Now that I climb up
the mountains, where all things are
going to change soon,
every spring when all the birds
--
chirp so merrily,
the cherry blossoms also
are in full bloom here
in the mountains where all come.
--
As the spring is best
of all the seasons to watch
the cherry blossoms,
I have now come to this hut
--
where monk Saigyo stayed,
located in the village
of Nishiyama,
leaving Kyoto behind.
--
So, in his garden,
I am profoundly moved by
the cherry blossoms
flowering in full bloom here.
--
Before long, the moon
will rise up in the dark sky,
however, I have
been watching cherry blossoms
--
all night long until the dawn.

hanka

When all the birds are
chirping merrily, I watch
the cherry blossoms
all night long even until
just when the day is breaking.

When I walk along
the road, on which I always
come to my office,
by the field, Narashino
--
after summer rains,
the breeze is fluttering cool
from the grove in which
a lot of trees are covered
--
with many green leaves.
Lilies begin flowering
nodding in the breeze
in this field, Narashino,
--
in which now, already
the deutzia flowers
have faded away
as well as the peonies
--
and rhododendron,
such birds as cuckoos
have also ceased to
chirp gaily to each other.
--
Lilies begin to
flower in the gentle breeze
bearing the sweet scent
in every garden
--
of the field, Narashino.

hanka

The white lilies, which
are so fragrant in the breeze,
begin flowering
in each garden of the field,
Narashino where I live.
