| Profile of an author, Mutsuo Shukuya Tanka poet／tanka scholar／translator 1943 - Mutsuo Shukuya was born in Osoki-village of Ome-city, Tokyo, Japan. 1971 - graduated from Toyo University, studied American & English literature 1971 - became an English instructor of Chiba-Nichidai-Ichiko Senior High School. 2009 - retired Now, Mutsuo Shukuya is one of those tanka scholars, translators and poets who knows the value of the correct form in tanka and has practiced it. As a tanka poet, he published an anthology, "100 tanka poems for 100 people"*1 (Phoenix Books/ Publishers) in the US in 2006.and he contributed another anthology, "Choka poems in English"(Vol.I)*13 to the bulletin published by the director of his school in 2007. Recently he entered it to the contest sponsored by the publisher, "Nihon-Bungakukan" held in 2010, he got a special prize with this anthlogy. As a tanka scholar, he contributed his lecture, "Classical Tanka Composition” to my site, after carefully rewriting from the original, which appeared serially in the monthly bilingual magazine, "Plaza Plaza" (publication suspended). As a translator, he first translated a tanka book, “Utsusemi” *2 by James Kirkup into Japanese in 1996, in which Kirkup introduced him as a fellow tanka poet who is deeply interested in the musical possibilities of tanka in song and recitation, and whose constant help, advice and encouragement have been invaluable. He translated another book, “Our Japanology"*3 by Michinobu Kato into English, and wrote extensive reviews of two books *4*5 by Boye Lafayette De Mente that reveal in precise detail the mindset of the Japanese, including both positive and negative aspects. These also appeared serially in the monthly bilingual magazine, "Plaza Plaza" (publication suspended). In 1985, he visited the residence of the Reizei Family and learned classical tanka theory, which the Reizei Family in Kyoto has continued, and which Teika Fujiwara framed. That is, he learned it from his tanka mentor, Fumiko Reizei, who is the twenty sixth descendant of Teika Fujiwara (1162-1241) who formulated the method of composition of aesthetic tanka. In May, 1993, he visited Paris and accompanied by the Reizei Family when they were invited by Gime-museum to participate in the Japanese Cultural Festival and played a part in composing tanka promptly at the traditional, Star-Festival called “Kikkou-Ten.” There he met one of the most well-known researchers of Japan & Japanese culture, Dr. Bernard Frank, who was so enthusiastic about Japan & Japanese culture, especially Japanese Tanka Poetry that he was eager to ask the Reizei Family to participate in the Japanese Cultural Festival in Paris and to recite the traditional, Star-Festival called “Kikkou-Ten.” Mutsuo Shukuya was so impressed with his enthusiasm for Japanese culture, especially Japnese Tanka Poetry that he began to translate tanka into English. After this, he published the original version of this lecture. When Dr. Bernard Frank died, he composed two Memorial Verses*7 for him. In December, 1993, he visited Hawaii & San-Francisco to survey the condition of tanka writing, sponsored by Nihon Poets Club as vice-president. During this tour he had an opportunity to be in correspondence with the famed English poet James Kirkup: Kirkup's friend and poet, Dan Pugh introduced him. And he met Kirkup in Japan in 1996 when he visited Japan to attend the Imperial Poetry Party to which Emperor Akihito had invited him. In 1995, he won the prize given by the Governor of Kyoto prefecture in the Tanka Contest sponsored by The Sankei-Newspaper. In 1996, Shukuya translated into Japanese Kirkup's Ustsusemi [The Cosmos] Collection-in which some of his own work was included. In the preface states that Shukuya's constant help, advice and encouragement were invaluable. Shukuya met Kirkup who was invited to Japan to attend Emperor Akihito's annual national poetry contest. In 1998, he was invited to the New Year's Poetry Party in the Imperial Palace and had an audience with the Emperor & Empress, together with a famous author, Jyakucho Setouchi and Jyunichiro Koizumi, who later became Prime Minster. Aft er he attended this party, he wrote a note, “An impression of the New Year's Poetry Party in the Imperial Palace in 1998.” *14 Since 1999, he contributed a column on tanka, “What is tanka & How to compose it” to the Bilingual Magazine, “Plaza-Plaza,” most of which he posted on this website, in which he shows how to compose Japanese classical tanka, such as olden poets composed in such anthologies as Kokin or Shin-Kokin, to foreigners who use English step by step from the beginning. He explains when tanka began and why tanka are composed by strict 31 syllable rules and so on. Furthermore, he shows how to use words when composing on each theme in detail. In 2002, he began translating a book, “New Japanology”*3 written by Dr. Michinobu Kato, retired professor of Aichi University and in whose blog since 2005, he has posted his poems, choka, & tanka-acrostic, which he composed spontaneously, two times every month until 2008. In November 2004, he read his paper, "The life of the Reizei Family"*8 at the academic society of Comparative Life & Culture. In December, 2004, in the book, The Japanese Samurai Code-Classic Strategies for Success (Tuttle Publishing) by Boye Lafayette De Mente on the strategies and tactics of Japan's samurai warriors, the author refers to present-day tanka poet Mutsuo Shukuya as “The fastest poet in the East”- a take-off on the “Fastest gun in the West” lore made famous by Hollywood movies. In this book James Kirkup contributed his essay, “TANKACROSTIC”*6 as a Forward. Here, he declares that Mutsuo Shukuya has invented a new kind of acrostic in the form of the Japanese tanka, which he calls “tankacrostics.” He seems to have begun composing acrostic tanka poems in 2003, when Princess Aiko was born. He composed one it for Princess Aiko first in order to celebrate her birth. In this book, he introduces Mr. Shukuya as an improvisational writer *10 to his readers. In May, 2008, he contributed an essay, "Translation of Japanese Tanka into English" *11 to the Monthly Magazine, "Japanese Literature." In February 2010, he contributed his lecture, "Classical Tanka Composition in English" and his translation, “New Japanology”*3 written by Dr. Michinobu Kato, to my website. In March, 2010, one of the greatest American researchers on Japan And Japanese cutlture, Boye Lafayette De Mente contributed his article, "Mutsuo Shukuya, Tanka Ambassador to the World"*9 to my site. In this article, he declares that there is a growing Internet-based movement in Japan to introduce the world to Japan's first great poetry tradition: tanka. He admires and regards Mutsuo Shukuya as a leader of this movement. In June 2010, he contributed his translation & commentary, "Japanese Modern Tanka for beginners in the world composed by Yoshihiro Kuromichi (New Version)"*15, and in July 2010 contributed his translation & commentary, "100 Tanka Poems by 100 Poets" compiled by Teika Fujiwara *16, to Boye Lafayette De Mente's blog from June 2010. In December, 2013, he contributed his collection "Hundred renga by three authors in Narashino."*17 Whoever try to compose tanka should compose haiku(575) first. It is the good way for the beginners to compose tanka. And teachers should add two lines named ageku77 after haiku(575) which beginners compose. This tanka book contains people in the world should learn or train each mind or Japanese mind. We Japanese are to learn Japanese mind, “SPONTANEOUS MIND”from America. 1st March 2014, he contributed his commentary, “What is Japan & Japanese culture.” *19 This is a collection of commentary on 20 books written by authors who wrote on what is Japan and Japanese culture. He read each book more than 10 times in order to write each comment and he has tried to cover the important points written in each book, that is to say, how each author shows “What is Japan” in each book. He hopes the reader will also do so. On 1st April, 2014, he contributed one more renga collection, "A hundred renga phrase s by three authors in Kawashima,”*20 and this collection also suggests good ways for beginners who want to start composing tanka. 著者・宿谷 睦夫プロフィール 宿谷 睦夫(Mutsuo Shukuya) 歌人／短歌学者／翻訳家 1943年(昭和18年)7月、東京都青梅市に生まれる 1971年(昭和46年)3月、東洋大学文学部英米文学科卒業 1971年(昭和46年)4月、千葉日本大学第一高等学校勤務（2009年3月定年退職） 宿谷睦夫氏は、「東洋で最も速く歌を詠む即興歌人」と言われている者の一人です。定期的に数分から数時間で、何十もの短歌を詠む競争を、過去の有名な俳人や歌人と同様に今日においても挑戦しています。彼は又、短歌学者、翻訳家としても活躍しております。これまでの作品には、歌人としては、「英文百人一首折句集」（アメリカ・フェニックス社刊）*１があり、短歌学者としては、作歌法「英文短歌講座」（バイリンガル雑誌「プラザ・プラザ」への連載）があります。それを再構成して、このサイトに掲載したのが「古典短歌講座」です。翻訳家としては、ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏の処女短歌集「うつせみ」*2の翻訳と加藤方寅氏の「新日本人論」*3の翻訳があります。それと同時に、米国の著作家・ボイエ・デイ・メンテ氏の日本人論に関する二つの著作「日本化するアメリカ」*4と「日本の秘密兵器・型」*5の書評も英語で綴っています。 1985年（昭和60年）、宿谷氏は「玉緒会」（京都冷泉家の短歌会）に入会し、藤原定家の26代目のご子孫・冷泉布美子氏に師事して、戦前までは皇族や公家のみにしか許されていなかった古典和歌の作歌法「古今伝授」を学びました。 宿谷氏は、英語教師(平成21年3月・定年退職)をしている傍ら、英国詩人・ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏をはじめ、アメリカ等、英語圏の現代詩人と交流をしながら、俳句・短歌・長歌の分野で英文・邦文の両方で優れた詩歌を創作するトップ詩人としての地位を築き上げました。また、英文折句ではアメリカ・ヨーロッパ文学の上で、「彼は新ジャンルを築いた」と英国詩人・ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏は小論「短歌ロスチック」*6の中で言及しています。 宿谷氏の短歌につきましては、「古典短歌講座」の各節に例歌が掲載されていますので、その作風をご鑑賞頂けると思います。又、長歌に関しましては、節季通信（年に２４回）に長年連載しておりましたものを平成19年に、勤務校の紀要に投稿したものの内、50首を平成２２年７月２４日に「英文長歌集」（第１集）*13として、サイトにアップ致しましたのでご鑑賞下さい。これは、平成22年度(株)日本文学館主催の第２回出版大賞・ポエム部門で特別賞を受賞しております。 1993年（平成5年）５月にはパリのギメ博物館が主催した「日本伝統文化祭」に於いて、当館の招きを受けた京都の冷泉家が行う七夕の伝統行事「乞巧奠」公演に随行しました。ここで彼は「流れの座」の儀式の遂行者として、参加し、フランス随一の日本研究家・ベルナール・フランク氏と出会います。フランク氏が逝去すると、その追悼歌*7を霊前に捧げました。 フランク氏はこれまで、門外不出になっていた七夕の伝統行事「乞巧奠」のパリ公演を強く要請した方でありました。フランク氏の日本文化に対する高い評価とその海外への紹介の要請の強さに打たれ、宿谷氏は短歌の翻訳に着手したほどでありました。その処女作には「英文短歌入門」があります。 1993年（平成5年）12月には日本歌人クラブが、アメリカの短歌事情を調査するために企画した「訪米視察団」に副団長として参加し、ハワイ、サンフランシスコを訪ねました。これを機会に、英国の友人・ダン・ピュー氏の紹介を経て、英国詩人・ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏との交流が始まりました。 1995年（平成7年）、宿谷氏の短歌は、京都府が主催する平安遷都１２００年記念行事で、「乞巧奠」の動態展示で披講された他、産経新聞が主催する短歌コンテスト「平成の歌会」では、京都府知事賞を受賞するなど、これまでにも数々の歌が入賞・入選しています。 1996年（平成8年）、カーカップ氏の短歌集「短歌の本」（ザルツブルグ大学出版部刊）に集録されている処女短歌集「空蝉」の日本語訳を刊行しました。その序文*2にはカーカップ氏は「宿谷氏は自分が短歌を創作するにあたり、常に私を助け、助言し、そして激励してくれましたが、大変貴重な存在として今日に至っております」と「短歌学者」として紹介している如く、宿谷氏は日本の伝統短歌の海外への紹介者として、逸早く英国詩人・ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏にその真髄を伝へていました。この年（平成8年）、今上陛下の招きを受け、毎年恒例の「宮中歌会始」に陪席されるため、来日されたのを機に直接面会することが出来たとのことです。 1998年（平成10年）には、宿谷氏も毎年恒例の「宮中歌会始」に今上陛下の招きを受け、文化勲章を得た瀬戸内寂聴氏や総理大臣になった小泉純一郎氏等と共に陪席されました。宿谷氏はこの時陪席された印象を「『宮中歌会始』陪聴の記」*14を綴っています。 1999年（平成11年）、バイリンガル雑誌「プラザ・プラザ」が主催する「プラザ短歌講座」では講師を務め、指導面でも大きな成果をあげています。その受講者の中からこれまでに、「平成の歌会」で３名が入賞しています。ダブル受賞した者もいます。また、「宮中歌会始」に入選した者もいます。 1999年（平成11年）からバイリンガル雑誌「プラザ・プラザ」に、「英文短歌講座」として連載を始めました。今回「古典短歌講座」として、サイトで公開したものは、これを添削し、再構成したものです。このサイトでは、古今集や新古今集に出て来る日本の古典和歌と呼ばれる短歌を詠んで見たいと思っている方を対象に、短歌の作り方を解説しています。短歌の起源を始め、31文字で詠む理由を述べるなど「短歌とは何か」や「短歌の作り方」を始め、「具体的な歌を詠んでいくための言葉の使い方」等を詳細に基本から順をおって解説しています。さらに、外国人でも詠んで戴けるように英語でも解説しています。 2002年（平成14年）より、バイリンガル雑誌「プラザ・プラザ」に、理学博士、愛知県立大学名誉教授・加藤方寅氏の「新日本人論」*3の翻訳を連載し、2005年から2008年までは、この雑誌が主管するブログで宿谷氏が即興で詠んだ短歌、長歌、折句等が月に２回に亘って連載されてきました。 2004年（平16年）11月、「比較生活文化学会」では「冷泉家の生活」*8と題して、冷泉家の歌の家の生活と歴史について発表しました。 2004年（平成16年）１２月、ボイエ・デ・メンテ氏がタトル社で発刊した「武士道」という本の中では、「日本の武士の戦略と戦術に関する拙著の一つで、私は当代歌人・宿谷睦夫氏を---ハリウッド映画で有名になった伝説の「西部一の早撃」に準えて---『東洋一の即興詩人』として触れた」と述べ、宿谷氏を「東洋一の即興詩人」として紹介されています。 http://boye-demente-cultural-insights.blogspot.com/2007/07/fastest-poet-in-east.html 2005年（平17年）10月、日本大学英文学会（会長 日本大学文理学部教授 原公章）主催の「文化発信型の英語教育の実践」をテーマにした英語教育シンポジアムで、一パネラーとして「教育における英語俳句・短歌」*12について発表しました。 2006年（平成18年）５月には、前述しました「英文百人一首折句集」（アメリカ・フェニックス社刊）*1を出版しました。その序文に、英国詩人・ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏は英語折句を「タンカロステック」*6と命名し、その創始者の名誉を宿谷氏に与えると叙述しています。これは2003年（平成15年）から、愛子内親王の誕生を機に、「折句」にも挑戦し、2006年（平成18年）5月現在で、日本語では1000首、英語では200首を越える折句を創作したものの中から100の英文折句を精選し編集・出版したものです。愛子内親王殿下に作られた折句は、2003年（平成15年）11月の朝日新聞夕刊に掲載された他、宿谷氏の畏友でアメリカの作曲家・デビッド・ガーナー氏が作曲され、2004年（平成16年）の大晦日にサンフランシスコで開かれたコンサートで歌われました。 http://www.davidgarner.com/works/choral.html 2007年（平成19年）11月、中村明氏は、第3冊目の著書「技養の民」を発刊しました。その中で中村氏は「日本人のアイデンティティ−」を「技養」と定義し、宿谷氏を「技癢の民」の典型的な人物の一人とし、前人未踏の文学分野を創設した「即興詩人」*10として紹介しています。 2008年（平成20年）５月、「国文学」（学燈社刊）５月号＜特集＞「翻訳を越えて」に、小論「短歌の翻訳」*11を投稿しました。 2010年（平成22年）２月、短歌講義「古典短歌講座」並びに、翻訳「新日本人論」*3を自身のプロフィ−ルを添えて、当サイトで公開しました。 2010年（平成22年）３月、米国の三大日本研究家の一人・著作家・ボイエ・デ・メンテ氏は、報道記事「国際短歌大使・宿谷睦夫」*9を寄稿して下さいました。これは「日本において短歌を世界に向けて発信するという画期的な運動が起っていること」を報じたもので、ボイエ・デ・メンテ氏はこの中で、宿谷氏をこの運動の先導者として紹介しています。 2010年（平成22年）6月、「黒路よしひろの現代短歌入門（英訳付）」（改訂版）＊15に続き、７月にはボイエ・デ・メンテ氏のブログに6月から連載されている「小倉百人一首入門」＊16を日英両国語で当サイトで公開を開始しました。いずれも、翻訳だけでなく、一つ一つの短歌に対する詳しい解説がなされております。ブログの連載の終了と共に完結する形になっております。 2013年（平成25年）12月、「習志野三吟百韻連歌集」＊17を日英両国語で当サイトで公開を開始しました。短歌はいきなり、57577を詠めるようにはなりません。まず、575の俳句を創作し、指導する人が挙句の77を添えて上げて短歌への道を開いてあげるものです。この度の連歌集はそれを目的に創作しました。まだ未完の箇所がありますが、序文の翻訳や足らない発句と挙句を補完して完結する形になっております。 2014年（平成26年）2月1日、ディミタール・アナキエフ氏著の「思わず沸き起こる心（SPONTANEOUS MIND）」*18の日本語の翻訳歌集が出版されました。俳句や短歌の創作によって鍛錬される日本人の心をタイトルにした歌集で、まず日本人が培うべき日本の心の本が、アメリカから発信されることになるのではないでしょうか。 2014年（平成26年）3月01日、「日本とは何か」（書評集）*19を編纂致しました。これは日本人と外国人を含め20人の「日本及び日本人とは何か」また「日本文化とは何か」について書かれた著書の中から20冊を選び出して、その書評をまとめたものです。今回は、全て日本語で紹介することにしました。この書評を読んで、実際の本を読み感動する方があれば、これにこしたことはありません。または、自分の日本人としての生き方に参考になれば幸いです。私はこれらの本によって日本を知り、自分を研鑽してきました。読者の皆様の期待に応えるものであると思っております。 2014年（平成26年）04月、「川島三吟百韻連歌集」＊20を日英両国語で当サイトで公開を開始しました。短歌はいきなり、57577を詠めるようにはなりません。まず、575の俳句を創作し、指導する人が挙句の77を添えて上げて短歌への道を開いてあげるものです。昨年１２月には既に「この種の連歌集」＊17をサイトにアップしました。この度の連歌集はそれに続くものです。これを修練すれば、実際の生活にも変化が出てくるものだからです。「思わず沸き起こる心」が沸くように脳が変化していくからです。 |
