of the New Year's Poetry Party
in the Imperial Palace

On a summer day twelve years ago I heard a message from God in a dream: you will be invited by the Emperor to the Imperial Palace. You must prepare for it. After I woke up from this dream I remembered the message above clearly. And it remains in my mind even now, although twelve years have already passed away. Actually, this summer dream came true in my life. Of course, these twelve years I have never told anyone because I thought that nobody would believe it. I was so excited to receive the invitation from the Emperor that I was not able to find the words to express the pleasure in my heart. And I recognized that the message from the god had come true.
 When one happens to experience good things, we say that he has gotten a "windfall". This proverb came true for me when I was invited to the Poetry Party held at the Imperial Palace on New Year's Day by the Emperor Akihito as a guest. But, as I received the message from God in a dream, "You must prepare for it," I must have missed a very good opportunity. Because I believed in the message from God, even in a dream, this dream was to come true, I think.
I got into a Taxi at the Tokyo Garden Palace Hotel, where I had stayed the night before, in order to go to the Imperial Palace at 8:50 on the morning of 14th January, 1998. In 15 minutes, I arrived at the northern entrance of the Palace through the Sakashita Gate. As soon as I got there, I was shown into the drawing room called "Shun-jyu no Ma", or 'Spring & Autumn room', where about 80 guests were waiting together. Among these guests were the Speaker and Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President and Vice President of the House of Councilors, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Minister of Health and Welfare(Junichiro Koizumi, who later became the Prime Minister), the Governor of Osaka prefecture (Isamu Yamada who had been a famous comedian called Yokoyama Nock) and many other statesmen as well as the author, Jyakucho Setouchi, who was given a commendation for performing meritorious cultural services in 1997 and Sohitsu Sen, who received an Order of Culture from the Emperor in 1998. For the hour we had before the ceremony began, we talked with each other in this room.
From 10:20, the name of each visitor was called one after another, in order of age. Each individual walked across the gallery to the main hall called "Matsu" or 'Pine trees' leaving a space of ten meters between each other. The buds of the plum blossoms, which came out here and there on their branches, had begun opening to bloom in the warm sunshine, although the snow had continued falling the previous night.
At 10:30 sharp, both the Emperor and Empress walked solemnly into the front of the main hall from the right-side entrance. His Imperial Highness, the Crown Prince & the Crown Princess, Prince & Princess Akishino, Princess Sayako, Prince & Princess Takamado followed.
These previous 14 years, I had already studied the original poetry party held in the hall of the Reizei Family, whose presidents had coached the Royal Family on how to compose tanka in the Imperial Palace as mentors before the Meiji Period began(1868). It is said that the formal order of this ceremony was established in the period when Teika Fujiwara was alive.
Each of the three grandsons of Teika Fujiwara, founded independent families: Nijyo, Kyogoku, and Reizei. The order of this ceremony in the Imperial Palace was determined by the Ayanokoji Family, whose ancestor received it from the Nijyo Family. So, they became different from each other during the long time which passed.
I had attended this ceremony at Reizei hall at least 10 times in the previous fifteen years. As I was invited to this ceremony at the Imperial Palace this year, I was able to experienced two kinds of order for this ceremony.
To begin with, the Poetry Party was originally a ceremony to recite poems, not only those composed by Emperor himself as messages which he received from the gods to people every year, but also poems by others, including members of the Imperial Family. This ceremony has been called “Hiko” or ‘Reciting poems with melody’ since the Heian period. The conductor of this ceremony is called “Dokuji”, someone who is aware of everything about tanka poetry and conducts the order, that is, to tell the members which tanka should be recited first. One of the members who read aloud each poem which the “Dokuji” has called on him to do is called “Koji”. Another who decides whether to recite with a high or low tune and actually shows this by reading the first phrase of each tanka is called “Hassei.” And the last two who are to recite together are called “Kosho.” So, this ceremony requires at least four members to be held. When I experienced the Poetry Party in the Imperial Palace, I found no difference between the Reizei and Imperial Palace as to the order of this ceremony.
A young gentleman as “Koji” read aloud the first tanka with the following message in the Hall while nobody spoke and it was quite silent: I was to read the first poem of all this year……and the same time…… on the theme called “Michi” or ‘Way’ which the Emperor himself requested for this Party. “Hassei” followed by reciting the first phrase showing the tune which he decided. There are two kinds of tunes in this ceremony. They are called “Ko” and “Otsu.” In the Reizei Family, every three poems are to be recited in the order of the tunes called “Otsu,” “Ko” and “Otsu.” And the last poem is recited with the “Otsu” tune among “Otsu” ones. That is, the last one is recited softly with “Otsu” tune.
In the Imperial Palace there was no difference from the Reizei Family but the tunes were more luxurious and gorgeous than the ones of the Reizei Family. 10 tanka selected from among poems which people submitted were recited first and followed by those of the Imperial Family and at last, a tanka by Empress Michiko was recited two times and a tanka by Emperor Akihito was recited three times.
I could not help acknowledging the great help which is invisible to human beings in attending the significant event, which is to held at the beginning of every year with only about 80 guests including the Speaker and Vice speaker of the House of Representatives, the President and Vice president of the House of Councilors, an individual who performed meritorious cultural services and one who received an Order of Culture from the Emperor, together with the Emperor. Whether I wish or not, and however tiny my will is, I could not help thinking that I was compelled to walk along a long road which someone had already constructed.
Before 11:40, this ceremony had completely finished. Both the Emperor and Empress walked back solemnly from the front of the main hall to the left exit. And His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince & the Crown Princess, Prince & Princess Akishino, Princess Sayako and Prince & Princess Takamado followed. All the visitors also walked back across the gallery from the main hall to the drawing room called "Shun-jyu no Ma" where we had all waited before this ceremony began. After each of the visitors drank “sake” and was handed a present of cookies, we left the room.
As I was so deeply impressed with the honor of attending, many poems naturally came to my mind to express my appreciation to the Emperor & Empress and other members of the Imperial Family. Two years ago, a friend brought some beautiful flowers, named “Gekka-Bijin” or ‘Ladies in the moonlight’, which are generally called the “Queen of all flowers” to my house. I would never have tried to compose poems to these flowers before I met the Emperor and Empress. The idea to compose poems about these flowers as a gift to each of them came to my mind after I attended this ceremony. And to His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince, I got the idea to compose about the huge statue of Buddha, which stands at Kamakura. Because I hope him to be an individual who wishes for the Happiness & Peace of the world with a merciful mind like Buddha. When I watched the maiden sasanqua flowers on the winter solstice day last year, the figure of the Crown Princess had come to my mind. Furthermore, I imaged an individual who has a merciful heart to the people and a rose with sweet scent when I watched her in the formal costume called “Jyuni-Hitoe” at their wedding ceremony. All of the people in Japan thought of the lady called Cinderella in the Grimm story when Princess Akishino was married. When I saw her Happy smile, I promptly came up with the idea to compose a poem to celebrate her wedding. I composed a poem for her in the fresh green costume which she then wore. For Princess Takamado, I composed a poem on the blue colors of the ocean and sky. Because she was dressed in a deep blue costume at the ceremony and I was aware that she had composed a tanka on the theme, “Nami” or
‘waves’ when she visited Izumo in Japan.
A poet is said to compose poetry as a representative of other people who want to express their hearts. So, I composed the following choka poems to do so. I would like to hand this note with poems not only to the Emperor and Empress but also to His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince & the Crown Princess, Prince & Princess Akishino, Princess Sayako and Prince & Princess Takamado.
『宮中歌会始』陪聴の記

今から12年前の夏、『天皇陛下よりお招きを戴くことになった。心して備えよ!』という声を夢枕に聞いたことがあった。そして、目覚めた後になってもその余韻がはっきりと残り、その時の「お告げ」が12年も経った今でも脳裏から離れたことが無かった。まさに、「夏の夜の夢」の出来事であった。

人に話しても相手にされないだろうと思って今迄誰にも言わずに過ごして来た。私が宮中歌会始に陪聴者として招かれる通知を戴いた時の感動は言葉で言い表せないものであったばかりでなく、夢のお告げ絵空事でなかったことを実感したものである。思いもかけない良いことがあることを「棚から牡丹餅」というが、今の私にとって宮中歌会始に陪聴者として招かれたことは、この諺のようなことが実現したことになる。しかし、12年前の夢のお告げがなければ、折角の恵みも取り逃していたに違いない。夢のお告げである『心して備えよ!』という忠告を忠実に守ってきたから実現したのだと思うからである。

平成10年1月14日(水)午前8時50分、前泊していた東京ガーデンパレスを出発し皇居に向かった。坂下門から参入した車は宮殿北寄せに到着した。衆参両議院の正副議長を始め最高裁判所長官、小泉厚生大臣、山田勇(横山ノック)大阪府知事等の政治家や平成9年度文化功労者・瀬戸内寂聴、平成9年度文化勲章受賞者・千宗室、短歌の国際的理解・普及に貢献された米国歌人・ライクホールド夫妻等を含めた約80名が集う「春秋の間」へと案内された。約1時間、列席の陪聴者の方々と歓談しながら儀式が始るのを待った。

 10時20分、年齢の順に列席者の名前が呼ばれていった。一人約10メートルの間隔を置いて正殿『松の間』への廻廊を進んで行った。淡雪が昨日まで降り続いていたのが嘘のように穏やかな日が差し込む内苑の大きな梅の木にはちらほらと花の蕾が綻び始めていた。

 10時30分、正殿正面に天皇皇后両陛下が、正面に向かって右側より厳かにお出ましになられた。皇太子殿下・同雅子妃殿下、秋篠宮殿下・同紀子妃殿下、紀宮清子内親王、高円宮殿下・同久子妃殿下等皇族が続いて参内された。

 明治まで宮中の歌の師範家であった京都の冷泉家が主宰する歌会「玉緒会」で私が歌の勉強をするようになって今年で14年目になる。宮中歌会始で行われる披講の形式が確立したのは藤原定家の時代であるといわれている。定家の家系は孫の代で二条家・京極家・冷泉家の三家に別れた。伝統儀式も宮中歌会始では綾小路家が伝えた二条家流が相続された為、時代の変遷とともに変化していったようである。私はこの十数年、冷泉家で行われてきた歌会始に少なくとも10回は参列してきた。今年は宮中歌会始にお招きを戴き、二条家流派儀式を体験する機会に恵まれたのである。

 披講の座を指揮し、謡うべき歌を提示する最も重要な役割を演じ、歌道の全てを弁えた人がなる「読師」、読師が示した歌を読み上げて皆に披講する「講師」、合唱の先導者で、音の調子・高低を決定する「発声」、それを合唱する「講頌」という四者によって行われるところは寸分変わりが無かった。

 若々しい男性の講師の声が静寂の間に響き渡った。「年の初めに〜、同じく〜、『道』ということを仰せごとによりて詠める和歌(やまとうた)。・・・・」。次に発声が節をつけて先導。披講の節には甲と乙がある。「乙な味」という言葉があるが、元は歌の節回しから来ている言葉である。冷泉家では三首ごとに乙、甲、乙の節回しで披講し、最後の一首は「乙の乙」と言って、同じ乙でも声を押えて披講するのである。宮中歌会始でもこの形式は踏襲されていたが、節回しは絢爛豪華であるというのが第一印象であった。10人の入選者の歌が披講された後に、皇族の歌が続き、最後に皇后陛下の御歌が2回、天皇陛下の御製が3回披講された。

 衆参両議院の正副議長を始め文化功労者、文化勲章受賞者等と共に天皇陛下のお招きを戴いて、宮中行事の中で最も貴重で一年の内で一番初めに行われる儀式に参列させて戴いた栄誉に目に見えぬ大きな働きを実感せざるを得なかった。願うと願わざるとに拘らず、又、自分の小さな意思にも拘らず大きな長い道が私の前途に横たわっているという想いに襲われた。

 11時40分、儀式は全て終了した。正面に向かって左側の扉が開き宮内庁長官の先導にもと、天皇皇后両陛下が退席されていった。皇太子殿下・同雅子妃殿下、秋篠宮殿下・同紀子妃殿下、紀宮清子内親王、高円宮殿下・同久子妃殿下等皇族が続いた。

 正面に向かって右側の廻廊を廻って再度「春秋の間」に戻ると直会の席が用意されていた。お神酒を戴いて、菊の紋章入のお菓子を戴いて退席した。

 この感動、この栄誉の想いから自然と歌が浮んできた。一昨年、我が家を訪問した花の女王と言われる月下美人の花の讃歌を詠んでみる気持になった。天皇皇后両陛下に捧げる歌として詠んだものである。

男性に捧げる歌を詠んだのは初めてであるが、皇太子殿下であるから別格である。鎌倉の長谷の大仏様が即座に連想された。大仏様のような慈愛の心で世の平和を願う治世を行って戴きたいという想いも篭められている。

冬至の寒い朝、淡紅の乙女山茶花を見た時、雅子妃殿下のお姿が目に浮んだ。十二単を纏われた御成婚の儀式、甘い馨の薔薇には雅子妃殿下の人々を愛でる御心ばえが連想される。

国民挙ってシンデレラの物語を連想した紀子妃殿下の幸せそうな横顔を拝見する内に、思わずその幸せを祝福したい気持になった。若菜の色の薄緑のお召し物も歌に詠み込んだ。

久子妃殿下は濃紺のロングドレスを召され、同じく「波」というお題で出雲の歌を詠まれたので、その海と空の青を歌に詠み込んでみた。

 詩人は人の想いを代表して詩歌に詠むものと言われている。陪聴者全ての人の想いが歌に詠み込まれていることを信じつつ「陪聴の記」とした。この「陪聴の記」を天皇皇后両陛下を始め、皇太子殿下・同雅子妃殿下、秋篠宮殿下・同紀子妃殿下、紀宮清子内親王、高円宮殿下・同久子妃殿下に長歌を添えて謹んでお捧げするものである。
