I would like to introduced the following 2 works of my mordern tanka to all readers in the world: this results from the opportunity of receiving a letter from Mr. Mutsuo Shukuya on a day of October this year (2009). He wrote his impressions on my project, “Recommendation for 100 million people to begin composing tanka.” He seemed to have been moved by this project so that he offered me a significant gift, a following "Oriku" or 'Acrostic tanka poem.'

yo shi no ya ma 　　　　 When I go up to
hi ro ki ya ma be ni　　Mt. Yoshino this morning,
ta tsu ku mo ya　　　　 the cherry blossoms
shi ra ko ro mo me su　　are in full bloom as if she
mi ko no ma chi ma su　　were a lady in white robes.

In this acrostic he described the landscape of my native village, which is near Mt. Yoshino which has been famous for its cherry blossoms since olden times; at the same time, he was able to put all the letters of my name, “Yo shi hi ro Ku ro mi chi” into it. He tells me that he composes these acrostics, which James Kiukup has named “Tankacrostics” in his essay, for everyone whom he meets, because he thinks it significant to meet people in his life so he seems to make it a rule to hand him/her his “Tankacrostic” as a memento as if he were following the famous preaching of the olden monks, “Ichigo-ichie” or 'Everybody seldom meets each other again in his /her life.'
Actually I have also a dream to expand my project not just for 100 million but for 650 million people in the world, if I could compose tanka in English fluently.
As soon as I talked about this a little, Mr. Shukuya offered to translate some of mine into English. So, I first sent 3 tanka, the best of which I chose from all my tanka with explanations. This time I introduce to you only two poems but he had already translated 10 tanka into English with th help of his two friends, Mr. Bruce Wyman as an auditor and Mr. Boye Lafayette De Mente as a surpervisor. Mr. Boye Lafayette De Mente is one of the three greatest authors on Japanese culture in the USA and he has already written more than 50 books, including more than 30 books on Japan & Japanese cutlure. I must give them great thanks for their efforts on behalf of myself. And all 10 tanka have become a most significant treasure in my life.


I hope this my tiny effort to introduce 2 tanka to all people in the world takes one step toward World Peace today independent of ideology, religion, tribe, nationality, history and so on.
I hope again that, through tanka, everybody in the world can communicate with each other sincerely and deeply. Furthermore, I hope the first ripples made in the pond through my action may expand as waves or murmurs to every shore in the world.


＜1＞７歳の僕の手元を旅立った凧が飛んでるゴビ砂漠の夜

Does the kite I flew
when I was seven years old
float up in the sky
over the Gobi desert
which I now see in my dream?

(I understand this imagery clearly....and it has deep meaning. I have no problem with it.....!)

「この歌は前半が実際の幼少の時に糸が切れてどこかへ飛んで行ってしまった凧のことです。後半のゴビ砂漠は僕は実際には行ったことがなく、あれから数十年経った今でもあの凧は海を越えて遥かゴビ砂漠の空を飛んでいるのだろう…という空想の一首ですね。もちろんそんなことがあるはずがないのは分かっていますが＾＾；ちなみにゴビ砂漠を選んだのは「星の王子さま」のようなイメージで、砂の下に恐竜の化石やいろいろな宝物が隠されてる場所という意味が込められています。」

「宿谷さま、すばらしい英訳ほんとうにありがとうござす！！どの訳も、英語があまり得意でない僕が読んでも、充分魅力が伝わってくる素敵な表現で感動しています。自分の短歌が英語だとこんなふうに表現するのかと、新鮮さと不思議な感じの喜びでいっぱいで＾＾一首目のゴビ砂漠の歌の最後の表現などほんとにおもしろいですね。そうですか、英語だとこのように表現しますか。言われてみればたしかにといった感じです（笑）」

What will I realize
in my future, I wonder?
There must be pathways
that I have built up on shore
but they have been washed away!

Their meanings (above two tanka) are now clear and meaningful..... no further editing is required...and good luck with your introduction of Kuromichi San's poetry....

「こちらも多少、観念的な部分のある歌なので理解しにくいかも知れませんね。これは心象世界の中で、砂場で砂の山を作り、その山にトンネルを掘っている状態を想像してもらえれば分かりやすいかと思います。砂山のトンネルって子供のときよく作りましたよね。
そんな砂山のトンネルを掘りながら自分に欠けている「道徳」という言葉を口にした瞬間に、トンネルが崩れる…結局この歌のトンネルは完成せずに崩れてしまうわけですが、そう詠うことで物事が思い通りにいかない人生の失意の時間を表現してみたつもりです。」

ここに掲載した作品は、「黒路よしひろの短歌」を宿谷睦夫氏が翻訳をしてくださり、それを宿谷氏のご友人であられるアメリカのブルース・ワイマン氏が添削、同じく友人でアメリカの著作家であられるボイェ・ラファイエット・デイ・メンテ氏が監修して下さったものです。宿谷氏とは、平成二十一年の十月に彼から次のような僕の名前を詠みこんだ折句を頂いたことから交友が始まりました。

「桜の名所の吉野山を訪ねると、白雲が沸き起こったかのように、それはまるで白衣を着た巫女が待っているかのように桜が咲き盛っていた」という意味の歌になっております。

宿谷氏は人との出会いを「一期一会」といいましょうか、尊い出会いの記念に、即興でこのような折句をプレゼントされてきたそうです。宿谷氏は僕が提唱する「一億総歌人計画」に感銘されお便りを下さいました。そして、更に僕の密かな願であった「世界への発信」を知るなり、即座に僕の歌の翻訳を申し出られ、今回の「黒路よしひろの現代短歌入門（英訳付）」の完成となったのです。
今回の僕の短歌の翻訳にあたっては、その宿谷氏が中心となり、国をまたいでの共同作業となりました。僕が提唱した日本人なら誰でも短歌ぐらいは詠めるようになろうという短歌普及活動「一億総歌人計画」を、日本人のみならず世界六十五億人にも広げようと奔走してくださった宿谷氏にこころから感謝の言葉を送るとともに、今回の共同作業が世界の人々との架け橋になれば嬉しく思います。
また、僕は英語がそれほど得意でもないこともあり直接には御礼を申し上げることも出来ませんでしたが、ご自身の貴重な時間を割いてくださったブルース・ワイマン氏、ボイェ・ラファイエット・デイ・メンテ氏にも改めて感謝の気持ちを伝えたいと思います。ここに掲載したものは二首のみとなりましたが、実際にはその過程で十首もの歌を翻訳、添削、監修して戴きました。そのどれもが僕にとってすばらしい宝物となりましたが、今回は、「現代にも息づいている日本文化」紹介のささやかな試みとして、この二首を発表させて戴きました。
思想、宗教、人種、国籍、過去の歴史など、さまざまなことが原因で争いの絶えないこの世界ですが、短歌を通じて人が自らの気持ちを伝え人が人の気持ちを理解しようとした時、そこに相手への理解と慈しみが生まれるのだと僕は信じています。
今回生まれたこの小さな輪がどうか世界へと広がって行きますようにと願い謝辞と致します。
