| [Ⅶ]Themes for tanka composition(5) (Intermediate courseⅡ) (8) Tanka in August（2004）平成16年(9/14-10/13) “The yellow flower” In this chapter, I will try to explain how tanka should be composed in Hazuki [August] (9/14-10/13). The most suitable theme on which to compose tanka this month is "Tsuki" or "The moon". The full moon this month, which we have called the harvest moon, has been admired as the most beautiful one since the mists of time in Japan. So, both "The silver grass" and "The yellow flower" have been offered to this harvest moon on the midday of this mouth. And the deer calls for its partner, the leaves of trees become dyed crimson and the quail comes down from northern areas to middle or southern Japan. So, the themes such as "The deer", "The colored leaves" and "The quail" as well as "The silver grass" and "The yellow flower" are all considered to be suitable ones of this month. Here, I will show you the following tanka, which are composed by Oshikochi no Mitsune (?-900-?), Mibu no Tadamine (?-905-?), Taira no Sadafun (871?-923) and myself on the theme, “The yellow flower”. The yellow flower seems to have been a flower which is capable of attracting males because it includes the word, "omina" which means "female" or "beautiful woman or lady", as the following tanka, which is composed by a poet, Ono no Yoshiki (?-902), shows. As I roamed the field,/ in which the yellow flowers were all flowering,/ one would tease me ficklely, the true sign of a lady. by Ono no Yoshiki On the other hand, the lady has been regarded as a being who is domestic and makes people friendly. So, a poet, Fujiwara no Toshiyuki (?-907?) composes the following tanka: I'd like to stay here,/ now that the yellow flowers’ Ominaeshi/ are fluttering in the wind bidding their welcome to me. by Fujiwara no Toshiyuki These examples should remind you how beautiful the yellow flowers are. I hope you can also compose tanka on this theme, "The yellow flowers". 女郎花吹きすきてくる秋風は目には見えねと香こそ知るけれ Although I can't watch/ the yellow flowers abloom just right before me/ I recognize them clearly in the cool breeze from the field. by Oshikochi no Mitsune 人の見ることやくるしき女郎花 秋霧にのみたちかくるらむ The yellow flowers,/ which would hate to be spied by the human like me,/ always hide themselves behind the mist which covers them all. by Mibu no tadamine 花に飽かてなに帰るらむ女郎花多かる野辺に寝なましものを Why do you leave now,/ the field where yellow flowers are all flowering,/ when I am going to stay to be together with them? by Taira no Sadafun 女郎花故郷の野辺訪ぬれは月夜の風に淡く揺れ咲く As I visited/ the village where I was born, I used to enjoy/ watching the yellow flowers fluttering in the moonlight. by Mutsuo Shukuya |
第七章（～歌の主題 5～）[中級講座Ⅱ] 第8節：葉月の歌「女郎花」（おみなえし） 今回は葉月の歌を詠んで戴く。葉月といえば、まず「月」である。葉月の月を「仲秋の名月」と呼び、古来から最も美しい月として尊ばれてきた。その月に供えるものに「薄」と「女郎花」がある。そして、「鹿」が妻を求めて鳴き、木々の葉は「紅葉」し、「鶉」が日本列島の北部から中南部におりてくる。「薄」「女郎花」「鹿」「紅葉」「鶉」等はいずれも葉月の歌題である。 初級講座では、その内、「谷紅葉」「雲間月」「鶉」の歌を詠んで戴いた。中級講座の第一回目である昨年は、「薄」の歌を詠んで戴いたが、今回は「女郎花」を歌題に歌を詠んで戴く。「女郎花」を歌題に、凡河内躬恒、壬生忠岑、平貞文と私の歌を例歌としてみた。 古今和歌集の中で、小野美材が「女という名を持った女郎花が咲き乱れている野辺に泊まろうものなら、それだけでわけもなく浮気だという評判を立てられてしまうだろう」という意味で詠んだ「女郎花多かる野辺に宿りせはあやなくあたの名をや立ちなむ」という歌があるように、女郎花は「女性」「美人」という意味の「をみな」という言葉を含んだ花であるので、男性を引きつける女性の風情を持った花であると昔から思われてきた。 一方、女性は家庭的で人の心を和ませてくれる存在であることから、同じく古今和歌集の中で、藤原敏行が「旅で泊まるのなら秋の野でするのがよい。そこには女郎花が咲いていて、『をみな』という名前を聞いただけで和やかになり、旅にあるような気がしない。（家庭にいるようだ）」という意味の「秋の野に宿りはすへし女郎花名をむつましみ旅ならなくに」という歌が詠まれている。 凡河内躬恒の歌は「女郎花の花の姿は見えないけれども、吹き過ぎて来る秋風がその美しい香を運んでくれた」という意味の歌である。 壬生忠岑の歌は「女郎花の花は私と同じように、人の目に触れられるのが怖いけど、深く立ちこめた秋霧だけが私を隠してくれる」という意味の歌である。自分の思いを女郎花に託して詠んだものだが、深い霧の立つ秋にこそ女郎花が咲く様子を詠んだ歌である。 平貞文の歌は「女郎花の花が美しく、見ていることに飽きることがないので、私は一晩そこに泊まって寝てしまった」という意味の歌で、女郎花の花の魅力を引き立てている。 また、例歌はいずれも「女郎花」がいかに美しい花であるかを連想させてくれる歌である。 Plaza-Plaza Tanka Cornerプラザ歌壇入選者 ①橋本ヒサ子②勝岡房江③林田幸子④服部満千子 ①色めきて川辺に咲ける女郎花誰に靡かむ水に写して To whom does it call,/ the deep yellow flower, which is set fluttering/in the cool breeze, I wonder?
