| [V]Themes for tanka composition(3)(Junior course Ⅲ) (6) Tanka in June （20002）平成14年(7/10-8/8) “Evening showers in the distance” In this chapter, I will try to discuss how tanka should be composed in Minazuki[June](7/10-8/8). The most suitable theme on which to compose tanka this month is "Yudachi" or 'Evening showers'. On this theme I suggested you compose tanka two years ago and last year on the more limited theme, "The clear sky after a shower". This time, I hope you can compose on another, contrasting theme, “Evening showers in the distance”. An evening shower, as its name shows, begins to fall the moment the thick black clouds cover the whole sky above. And only thunder and lightning remain in the distance after the clouds leave. After a shower, the drops remain upon the leaves and water also remains on the surface of the garden. In the meanwhile, the moon also rises in the eastern sky. This scene can be often seen on a mid-summer evening. In the collection, Shin-Kokinshu, the following tanka by Kintsune Fujiwara(1170-1244) sketches the scene that the black clouds leave after a shower, and Yorimasa Minamoto(1105-1180) sketches the scene of the moon rising after the shower: A block of dark clouds,/ which brought the sudden shower, has just passed away,/ while the bamboo leaves, still wet, are fluttering in the breeze. by Fujiwara Kintsune Up in the clear sky/ as soon as the shower stops the moon has come out/ although water is still left on the ground in my garden. by Yorimasa Minamoto This time, I hope you can compose tanka which sketches a shower in the distance before or after it falls near. Here, I will show you the following tanka, which are composed by Minamoto no Toshiyori(1054-1129), my mentor, Reizei Fumiko, a fellow pupil, Motogi Yoshio and myself on the theme, "Evening showers in the distance". The author, Minamoto no Toshiyori, expresses his yearning for the shower in the distance, which brings us coolness both in mind and body even in hot summer in his tanka. Although the thick black clouds cover the whole sky above and only thundering remains, a shower often never falls. And after a while it leaves in the distance. The author, Fumiko Reizei describes the situation above in her tanka. A shower is a phenomenon which happens in a short time and in a limited district. So, when we watch it in the distance, there are districts in which a shower falls and others where only the clouds cover the sky. Furthermore, in some districts even the sunlight leaks from the breaks of clouds. The author, Yoshio Motogi describes the situation above in his tanka. 十市には 夕立すらし ひさかたの 天の香具山 雲隠れゆく As the clouds cover/ all Mt. Amanokagu, a sudden shower/ around the village, Toichi, may have already fallen. by Minamoto no Toshiyori 暑き日の 待たる夕立 軒それて 遠くに聞こゆ なる神の音 The shower has left/ here around my house, in which I have yearned for it/ to relieve the dead fever, thundering in the distance. by Fumiko Reizei |

Hira,/ while the Awatsu seashore can be seen by the lightning. by Motogi Yoshio 山越へて父母住まふ故郷は夕立すらし稲妻の影 Upon my way to/ my hometown, where my father and mother live now,/ the lightning can be seen: a shower may be falling. by Mutsuo Shukuya 第五章（～歌の主題 3～）[初級講座Ⅲ] 第6節：水無月の歌「遠夕立」（とうくのゆうだち） 今回は水無月の歌を詠んで戴く。水無月は大暑を迎える月である。この暑さに清涼感を与えるのが夕立である。暑さの中でも清清しい清涼感を詠む歌題に「夕立」がある。今回は「遠夕立」を詠んで戴く。夏の暑さを癒してくれるものとして夕立が好んで詠まれるが、夕立は俄雨とも呼ばれるように、黒雲が空を覆ったかと思う間に降ってくる。そして、夕立を降らせた黒雲が立ち去ると、遠くに雷鳴と稲妻だけを聞くというのが夏の風物詩である。そして、夕立の立ち去った後には、庭の面や草木に雨露が残り、やがて月が出てくる。その間の光景はそれは清清しいものである。新古今和歌集の中でもこの夕立の後の様子を詠んだ秀歌がある。一つは藤原公経が「夕立の露のすがりついている庭の玉笹が風になびき、空では、それを降らせた一団の雲が過ぎ去って行った」という意味の「露すかる庭の玉笹うちなひき一群過きる夕立の雲」という歌である。もう一つは前々回の例歌として紹介した源頼政の「庭の面はまたかわかぬに夕立の空さりけなく澄める月かな」という歌である。 「遠夕立」を歌題に、源俊頼、歌の師範・冷泉布美子先生、歌の同門の本儀良雄氏と私の歌を例歌としてみた。 源俊頼の歌は「天の香具山のある奈良県橿原市の十市の里には、今、夕立がしているらしい。天の香具山が雲に隠れているので」という意味の歌である。夏の暑さを癒してくれる夕立を遠方からも恋しく思う気持ちが詠み込まれている。 黒雲が立ち込めて、雷鳴が轟けども雨は降らずに、その内に遠方に立ち去って行くということもしばしばある。冷泉先生の歌はそのようなよくある様子が上手に詠み込められている。 夕立は極めて短期間に限定された地域に起こる現象である。それを遠方から見ると、雨が降っている地域もあれば、空が雲だけに覆われている地域もある。また、雲間から漏れて日がさしている地域も狭い地域の中では起こってくる。本儀氏の歌にはそのような特殊な状況が見事に詠み込められている。 Plaza-Plaza Tanka Cornerプラザ歌壇入選者 ①小林和歌子②高山薫③山本綾子④岡本由紀子 ①遠の峰 夕立すらし 稲妻の 影は照り映ゆ 雲のまにまに As the bright lightning/ can be seen among the breaks and rents in the clouds/ a shower may be falling all around the mountain peaks. by Wakako Kobayashi ②夕立の 雲覆ひゆく 西表 遠く轟く 雷の声 Iriomote,/ whose sky is covered over with dark thunder clouds./ Soon they will have a shower: the bright lightning can be seen. by Kaoru Takayama ③夕立の 窓辺を叩く 雨止めと 峰渡りゆく 稲妻の影 Although a shower,/ which poured hard on the window, has already ceased,/ only lightning can be seen from among the mountain peaks. by Ayako Yamamoto ④雷に 応へて鳴くや 庭先の 蛙と共に 雨を待ち侘ふ From the far distance/ the thunder can be just heard: I hope a shower/ will fall, that a frog might then respond with song in my yard. by Yukiko Okamoto |
