[V]Themes for tanka composition(3)(Junior course V)
(5) Tanka in May (20002)平成14年(6/11-7/9)
“The fireflies shine on the seaweed”

In this chapter, I will try to discuss how tanka should be composed in Satsuki[May](6/11-7/9). The most suitable theme on which to compose tanka this month is Hotaru(The fireflies). As the fireflies begin to fly around early in May, I suggested you compose tanka on the theme, "The fireflies" two years ago and "The fireflies flying round a stream"last year. This time I hope you can compose on the more limited theme, “The fireflies shine on the seaweed”.
As I quoted last year from the essay, "Makura-no-Soshi" by Sei-shonagon(?-1000-?), she mentions how we feel elegant when the fireflies fly round. So, you can compose tanka more easily on this theme.
The theme, "The fireflies" has been often used by lovers to show their love, as in the following tanka by Jyakuren Hoshi(?-1155-?).

I would like to tell/ my heart to my dear lover
to hold the fireflies,/ which shine brightly, in my hand.
But she does not feel for me. by Jyakuren Hoshi

He seems to have composed this tanka by quoting some parts of the following refined tanka which two old poets, Kino Tomonori(?-907) and anonymous, composed:

My heart burns with love/ whenever evening has come
as if the fireflies/ shone brilliantly despite her
paying me no attention. by Kino Tomonori

The very thing which/ nobody can keep hidden
is one's heart, like the/ light which fireflies give off or
pour out even though it breaks. anonymous

Here, I will show you the following tanka, which are composed by Murakami Jyoko(925-967), my mentor, Fumiko Reizei, a fellow pupil, Teiko Hata and myself on the theme, "The fireflies shine on the seaweed".
Speaking generally, you may not offen have opportunities to compose tanka on the theme of love. So, I suggest you compose tanka about fireflies only flying about around something like seaweed along the stream.

Fireflies fly away,/ perhaps they are showing me
the water under/ the summer grasses, which grow
in close order near at hand. by Murakami Jyoko

Along the river,/ on which the moon does not shine
because of the rain,/ the fireflies flying about
light up the seaweed dimly. by Fumiko Reizei

The fireflies fly off/ throwing light on the seaweed
all the more dimly/ at midnight because the moon
has gone down in the river. by Teiko Hata
The light, which fireflies/ throw upon the seaweed, is
all the clearer for/ the completely dark midnight
also softening my heart. by Mutsuo Shukuya
