| [Ⅱ]How to compose tanka (Primer course Ⅱ) (6) To write tanka on your greeting card The sixth principle of composing tanka is to write tanka on greeting cards to send to all your friends such as Christmas cards and New Year’s card. Previously, I have introduced two ways for people to practice tanka constantly. One of them was that people should choose an adequate mentor to show them good manners and give them opportunities to compose tanka. The other was to have good tanka friends with whom to write letters with tanka over and over again. But it may be hard either to choose an adequate mentor or to have good tanka friends. So, you had better write your tanka at least on your Christmas Card or New Year’s Card to all your friends: surely some of them will reply with tanka to you. Furthermore, some of tanka poets who can write good poems may show you better techniques or others may introduce a good mentor to you. And one of them may become a good tanka friend with whom you want to exchange letters with tanka over and over again. In my case, I used to write my tanka on my New Year’s Card to all my friends for the first ten years. One of them who read my tanka written on this card told me about the Reizei Family. And then, I was able to find a tanka mentor, Fumiko Reizei. After I began studying tanka in her class, I had made it a rule to write tanka on my Summer Greeting Card as well as New Year’s Card for ten years. So, several of them also replied with tanka on their cards from the first and later more than twenty had done so being pleased with my tanka flavored with traditional spirit. As I sent my card to all friends abroad as well as in Japan, one of mine in England, Dan Pugh introduced his friend to me in order to encourage and please me to write more fascinating tanka. This was an English poet, James Kirkup who lived in Andorra. Around June in 1995, I received the first letter from James Kirkup, who was president of British Haiku Society at that time. I hear that he had written more haiku than tanka. But he had already tried to learn tanka when translating tanka collection, “100 tanka poems by 100 poets” into English. So, he asked me to send him more translations of it as possible as I could in Japan. As soon as I sent him several ones, he replied a letter with his impressions their translations: as far as people in abroad especially in Europe and in America read ones translated as Japanese poems, these could never fascinate them deeply. Thus as soon as he finished translating all tanka in it into English, he printed them in his book, “A BOOK OF TANKA” (University of Salzburg) published in 1996. Here, I’d like to show you you, first, a twin-tanka which James Kirkup and I composed to exchange a half of it. First James Kirkup composed and sent the former to me and then I replied the latter to him. Furthermore, I’d like to show you 2 tanka, one of which I composed on my New Year’s Card first. 仄々と照れる春日も夕暮れて霞む夜空に昇る望月（年賀） Faintly shimmering,/ spring rays are now declining into *evening --/ In the misty skies of night the full moon now starts rising. by Mutsuo Shukuya 五月雨の上る朝に古の人も愛てにし杜若咲く(暑中見舞) Irises are out/ near a pond in the morning after showers, which/ ancient poets seem to have watched to compose poetry. by Mutsuo Shukuya 第二章（～短歌の作り方～）[入門講座Ⅱ] 第 6節 歌の便り 短歌を詠む為の第六の原則は、いつも友達に送っている挨拶状の内、少なくとも年賀状や暑中見舞状に「歌の便り」を書いてみることである。 するとその中には歌で返事をくれる人が必ず出て来るものである。その上、歌に上達している人であれば、より良い歌の作り方を教えてくれる場合もあるし、その人にあった師範を紹介してくれることもある。又、歌で返事をくれる方の中から何度でも歌で手紙を書いてみたいと思うような「歌の朋友」（第5原則）になる方さえ出て来る。 私の場合は、歌を詠み始めるようになった最初の十年間は、年に一回年賀状に自分の歌一首を認めるのが精一杯であった。ところが、その歌の年賀状を受け取った友人の一人が冷泉家の存在を紹介してくれたのである。それがきっかけとなり、私が「歌の師範」（第4原則）・冷泉布美子先生に師事することが出来るようになったのである。 冷泉布美子先生に師事してからの10年間は、年賀状に加え暑中見舞状にも歌を認めるようになった。そして、流麗な冷泉流の歌に感動して、何人かの方が歌で返事を下さるようになっていった。最初は数名であったが、多い時には20名を越えることもあった。 私の「歌の便り」は、国内だけに限っていなかったので、英国の歌の朋友の一人・ダン・ピュー氏が「私の英語の歌がもっと上達するように」ということで、彼が尊敬して止まない友人の一人を紹介してくれたのである。その方が前述の英国詩人・ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏であったのだ。 カーカップ氏から最初の便りが届いたのは、1995年の6月のことであった。カーカップ氏は当時、英国俳句協会会長を務めており、短歌よりも俳句の創作が主であった。しかし、俳句には物足りないものを感じ始めていた時で、「百人一首」の翻訳に取り掛かろうとしている時であった。カーカップ氏からは既に出版されている「百人一首」の翻訳本を送ってくれるようにとの依頼を戴いた。私は日本で手に入ることの出来る翻訳本を数冊買ってアンドラに送った。その数冊を全て読み終えたカーカップ氏から直ぐに、次のような読後感がファックスで送られてきた。それには「百人一首は日本の秀歌が集められていると海外からは思われていたので、こんな英訳が出回っていたのでは、日本の短歌が海外、特に欧米で高い評価が得られなかったのももっとものことだ」と認められてあった。そこで彼は、直ちにその翻訳に取り掛かり、翌年の1996年には「短歌の本」（ザルツブルグ大學出版）の中に掲載したのだ。カーカップ氏の「百人一首」の翻訳には、まだ誰も手がけることの出来なかった日本の歌の美しさを海外に紹介したいという心遣いがあったのだ。 かくして、私は本節の主題である「歌の便り」が御縁となって、「歌の師範」（第4原則）・冷泉布美子先生に師事することが出来るようになったばかりでなく、何度でも歌で手紙を書いてみたいと思うような「歌の朋友」（第5原則）・ジェイムズ・カーカップ氏とも巡り会うことが出来るようになったのである。 今回は、４首の短歌をご紹介したい。前半は、カーカップ氏と私との相聞歌であり、歌の文通が始った1995年9月頃のものである。カーカップ氏ご自身の歌は1995年の12月に出版した第一歌集「空蝉」にこの歌が掲載されている。 後半は、私が年賀状と暑中見舞状にそれぞれ掲載した2首の短歌である。 |
