(X) Aspects of the Japanese Language While considering that the unique behavior of the people who speak Japanese depend upon nothing except Japanese itself, I found some writings by an emeritus professor of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Dr. Tadanobu Tsunoda, who proves these theories are right. Dr. Tsunoda’s research convinced me that what I am thinking is not fundamentally wrong. Especially as Dr. Hideki Yukawa, one of Japan’s greatest scientists and thinkers whom I cannot help but respect, thought highly of Dr. Tsunoda’s theories. That, indeed, deepened my convictions. Dr. Tsunoda made clear that the physiological brain mechanism of people is deeply influenced by the language which one learns between the ages of six and nine through his research on the relation between voice and the sense of hearing. The influence of the language which people learned during this period reaches to a deep psychological state or the emotion. That is to say, the subconscious organization of people’s brains is determined by the language environment which they learned from the age of six to nine.. It should be noted that this phenomenon is not connected to race. It is strictly a matter of language. People of Japanese ancestry who are raised in non-Japanese language environments do not become Japanese in their thinking and behavior. They become American, or French, or British, etc. By the same token, Europeans and others who have been raised in a Japanese language environment tend to think and act like traditional Japanese. It is also interesting to note that Dr. Tsunoda’s experiments proved that all Chinese and Korean as well as the people of India, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran and Africa are similar to Europeans in their brain patterns. His research made clear, only Japanese and Polynesians have different subconscious brain organizations from other people in many countries. That is to say, Japanese and Polynesian languages have quite unique structures. Dr. Tsunoda thinks that the starting point of the differences between Japanese and Polynesian languages and other languages is based on the number and importance of vowels in these two languages. Europeans and Americans manage vowels, which have no meanings, in their right-brains, while Japanese and Polynesian do so in their left-brains. (Furthermore, the sounds of insects and the murmur of a stream are also managed as well as vowels, which have no meanings.) That is to say, Japanese and Polynesian unconsciously tend to take some intention or feelings from the natural sounds as well as from languages. In other words, Europeans, Americans and others tend to treat only logical or intellectual information in their left-brain, while Japanese and Polynesian tend to treat not only logical and intellectual but also emotional and natural sounds as well concurrently in their left-brains. It seems to be fundamentally dependent upon these mechanisms that the ideas of Europeans and Americans tend to be digital regarding their languages, while those of Japanese tend to be analog regarding their language. As I have just discussed, it had been proven scientifically that Japanese and Polynesians have a unique subconscious brain organization compared to Europeans, Americans and others. |
